Wilbur Holmes Sr. Obituary

Wilbur Lamar Holmes Sr., a cherished husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on June 9, 2025, in Smiths Station, Alabama. Born on September 14, 1947, in Columbus, Georgia, to Grady Dewey Holmes and Clyde Marie Holmes, Wilbur's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, family, and faith.

Wilbur found his companion of 28 years, Kate (Shamblin) Holmes, with whom he built a legacy of love and devotion. Together, they built a vibrant life.

Wilbur leaves behind his children Terrie Lynn Holmes (Travis), Wilbur Lamar Holmes Jr. (Michelle), Angela Guess (Brian), Thomas Morgan (Stephanie), Benny Ray Williams (Rita), and Judy Tunell. Wilbur's joy was multiplied as he became a proud grandfather to seventeen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored and cherished. He is also survived by his brother, Larry Holmes, who, along with the rest of the family, will carry on Wilbur's legacy of love, music, and faith.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Eugene Holmes, Albert Holmes, Charles Holmes, sisters Shirley Glover, Mildred Vela, Janice Camp, granddaughter Haley Holmes and first wife Nellie Holmes.

Wilbur's professional life was marked by his long-standing commitment to Sides Drywall, where his skill and dedication were well-known and respected. Beyond his work, he was a man of many interests and talents. A gifted musician, Wilbur could play the guitar, piano, mandolin, and banjo with a passion and proficiency that captivated all who listened. His love for Christian music was a source of comfort and inspiration, both for him and for those fortunate enough to hear him play.

An avid outdoorsman, Wilbur found peace in the simple pleasure of fishing, where the quiet of nature was a balm for his soul. His talent for woodworking was not just a hobby but a craft, as he created beautiful flutes that were both functional and artistic. In the kitchen, Wilbur's cooking was legendary, especially his southern food, which he lovingly prepared for his family and shared with the community through his beloved "Paw Paw's Cafe" food truck.

A man of unwavering faith, Wilbur was an Evangelist and dedicated member of the Word of Faith community, where he found solace and strength in the teachings and fellowship. His deep connection to his spirituality was evident in his love for reading the Bible and partaking in the church's activities. Reverend Michael Greer will lead the service in honor of Wilbur's life on Thursday, June 12, at 2 PM at Word of Faith, with visitation beginning at 12 PM.

To describe Wilbur as loving is to capture the essence of his being. His warmth and kindness permeated every aspect of his life, touching all who knew him. He was a beacon of light and love, a pillar of his family, and a friend to many.
