Susan Camille Deaton, a cherished mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away on March 3, 2025, at the age of 69 in Phenix City, Alabama. Born on March 12, 1955, in Macon, Georgia, Susan's life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and joy that she spread generously to all who knew her.
Susan was the beloved daughter of the late Jack Sherwood and Betty Mason Sherwood. Her life was further blessed and challenged by love and loss, including her marriages to the late Jerry Douglas Lyles, with whom she shared her sons, and Joel Dion Deaton, who also preceded her in death. Her heart knew both the profound joy of companionship and the deep sorrow of bidding farewell to her dear sons, Gregory Scott Lyles and Doug Lyles, Jr.
Despite the adversities she faced, Susan's resilience and spirited nature never wavered. She dedicated many years of service to the Bibb County School District before embracing her role as a devoted homemaker. Her commitment to family was unwavering, and she poured her heart into creating a warm and loving home.
Susan's legacy is carried on by her grateful family, including her son Jeff Lyles and his wife Stephanie, her sister Melanie Thompson, and her cherished grandchildren, Haley Brown, Noah Brown, and Emma Lyles. She was also a doting aunt to her nieces Monica Tippett with husband Tim, Marie Carter Morgan with husband Craig, and her nephew Chris Lyles with wife Belinda. Each one held a special place in her heart, and she in theirs.
Susan's life was one of engagement and simple pleasures. She found joy in the vibrant colors of her coloring books, a hobby that provided her with both relaxation and a way to express her artistic side. Her pet Chihuahua, Little Bitty, was her constant companion, bringing laughter and comfort into her daily life.
