Ruth Shelley Obituary

Ruth Mary Shelley, a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, left this world on March 12th, 2025, at the age of 65, in Fort Mitchell, Alabama. Born on March 28, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ruth's life was marked by her unwavering kindness, resilience, and the joy she brought to those around her.
Ruth proudly served her country in the U.S. Air Force for 18 years, including a deployment during Desert Storm, with a dedication that reflected her strong character and patriotism. Her post-military career saw her as a beloved member of the team at Burns Steakhouse in Tampa, a place where her warm personality shone and where she had the pleasure of meeting many celebrities. Ruth concluded her professional journey with the United States Postal Service, from which she retired, leaving behind grateful colleagues and a legacy of service.
Beyond her professional life, Ruth was a passionate cat lover whose compassion for her feline friends was boundless. She also had an adventurous spirit, finding joy and relaxation in cruising and exploring new horizons. Her love for travel was only matched by the love she had for her family. During her travels Ruth had an innate ability to navigate the world, never once getting lost, with a map in hand as her trusted companion. Her journeys were not just about the destinations but the adventures along the way.

An ardent fan of the thrill that games of chance provided, Ruth found pleasure in visiting casinos, especially during her travels. One of her favorite destinations was the Hard Rock in Tampa, where she found a delightful blend of excitement and relaxation. Those who accompanied her on these escapades will fondly remember her cheerful laughter echoing through the lively hum of slot machines and card tables.

When not indulging in her wanderlust or enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of a casino, Ruth could often be found lost in the pages of a romance novel or sitting in the soft glow of a movie theater screen. She had a special affinity for the escapism that these forms of storytelling offered, transporting her to worlds of love, drama, and happy endings.

Ruth is survived by her mother: Sheila Kennedy Dodd and her four siblings: Theresa Cauldwell, John Shelley (Janice), Linda Finley (Gary), and Douglas Dodd (Lisa). She was a devoted aunt to her many nephews and nieces, who will miss her storytelling, laughter. Her passing was preceded by her brother James Shelley and her father, John Asten Shelley Jr.
Her life was a testament to the power of positivity and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Ruth's unwavering support and generous heart will be remembered by all who had the fortune of crossing paths with her.
