Robert “Bob” Lewis Thomas, a cherished husband, father, brother, and decorated veteran, passed away at the age of 90 on June 7, 2025, in Phenix City, Alabama. Born on September 14, 1934, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to parents Louis and Pearl Crigger Thomas.
Bob grew up in the close-knit community of Johnstown, where he developed a lifelong love for country music and the iconic Westerns of Gene Autry and John Wayne. His early interest in the tales of courage and heroism foreshadowed the valor he would later display in his own life. He grew up with 7 brothers and sisters who he loved deeply: Kenneth Thomas, Ted Thomas, Mary Lou Burkhart, Joyce Liggitt, Vera Helbig, David Thomas and Ricky Thomas
Bob served 21 years in the United States Army. While serving as a Military Police officer in South Korea, Bob met Unsuk “Sue” and they embarked on a journey of companionship and love that would span decades.
Beyond his military service, Bob's life was filled with simple pleasures. He found solace in the quiet moments spent watching television, and listening to country music.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Unsuk “Sue” Thomas of Smiths Station, Alabama; his children, Lewis Thomas, Matthew Thomas, Mary Bowman (Edward), Dolores Wright, Jeffrey Thomas, and Joyce Goin (Michael); his sisters, Mary Lou, Joyce Liggitt; his brother Ricky Thomas; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. His passing was preceded by his brothers and sister Vera, Ted, Dave and Ken.
A service to honor Bob's life and his contributions to his country will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania. As we bid farewell to a man of honor, let us reflect on the lessons of bravery and devotion he has left behind.
