Robert L. Garz, 1st SGT (Retired)
Robert L.Garz died at home on January 28th after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Mr. Garz was born on June 23, 1935 in Superior, Wisconsin, the son of the late Richard Carl Garz and the late Ida Mortenson Garz. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Carlson of Superior, Wisconsin and his brother, Richard Garz of Houston, Texas.
He is survived by his spouse of 67 years, Doris Garz, and their four children, Keith Garz (Rebecca) of Baconton, Georgia, Shirley Davis (David) of Phenix City, Alabama, Kim Garz of Salem, Alabama, and Jason Garz (Tara) of Springfield, Virginia. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Carla Evans (Will), Jennifer Garz (Marc), and Mia Garz, four great-grandchildren, Jonathan Conner (Tearra), Jacob Evans, Keri Young, and Nathain Young and two great-great-grandchildren, Braxon and Brayden Conner.
Mr. Garz attended Northwest High School in Maple, Wisconsin and left school to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1953. He served for 21 years, including three tours in Germany and three tours in Vietnam during which he was awarded four Bronze Stars, one with the “V” design for Valor.
After retiring from the military, he attended Chattahoochee Valley Community College and Troy State University, earning a degree in criminal justice. He graduated from the Police Academy and served on the Auburn University Police Force.
A private family memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.
