Charles Anthony "Tony" Jernigan, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, in Phenix City, Alabama. Tony was born on August 5, 1956, in Albany, Georgia, and throughout his 68 years of life, he exemplified what it means to live with a friendly and faith-filled spirit.
Tony is survived by his loving wife, Rita Kay Jernigan; daughter, Tara Bailey (Timbo); grandchildren, Dylan Wooten (Cheyenne), Bethany Walker (Daniel), Danielle Strong (Mathew), Brianna Kittrell (Will), Jessica Necessary, Courtney Bailey, and Chase Bailey; brother Tim Jernigan (Penny); and great-grandchildren Ryan, Hadleigh, Archer, Izzy, Mathew, Brantley, and Rae. He also leaves behind his aunt Yvonne McDonald, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly. Tony was preceded in death by his first love and late wife, Melinda Sue Jernigan. He was also preceded by his daughters, Tonia Marie Jernigan and Terra Starling.
Tony's journey through life was marked by a profound love for his family and a dedication to his faith. He studied theology, which paved the way for a life of service to others, first as a retired insurance agent and then as a retired Pastor at Bethel Freewill Baptist Church. His commitment to his community continued through his membership at Avalon Woods Baptist Church, where he was a beacon of light and guidance for many.
Music, especially Southern rock, was a passion for Tony, who also enjoyed traveling, attending concerts, and playing the snare drums. He cherished moments spent watching his favorite teams, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Falcons, from the comfort of his recliner. His love for grilling and his signature dishes, including orange sherbet and banana pudding, brought joy to family gatherings. Tony's affection for his many cats, Angel, Cinnamon, Whiskers, and Midnight Man, was well-known, as they were not just pets but members of his extended family.
Tony's life was a testament to the power of kindness and the strength of faith. He navigated life's challenges with grace and often found solace in the simple pleasures, like the laughter of his grandchildren or the companionship of his beloved wife, Rita. His friendly demeanor was contagious, and his faith-filled approach to life inspired those around him to live with purpose and love.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, November 30, 2024, 11:00 am at Colonial Funeral Home, Pastor Danny Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview memory Gardens. Visitation Friday 6-8 pm at the funeral home.
