Margaret Eller Mays, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2024, in Phenix City, Alabama, at the age of 81. Born on July 31, 1943, in Smithville, Mississippi, Margaret was a guide of love and strength throughout her life.
Margaret, known affectionately to her friends and family as Margaret, was the daughter of the late John "JT" Tigle Johnson and Orine Towery. She was a devoted mother, not only to her own children but to all those she held dear. Her husband, Douglas Mays and son, Travis Mays, predeceased her, leaving a legacy of love and memories. Margaret's nurturing spirit lives on through her daughters, Katina Finney (James), and Donna Crofutt (Jason Dykes), who will forever cherish the wisdom and care she imparted.
Margaret's professional life was spent dedicated to her role as a meat wrapper at Terry's Grocery, where she was not only a diligent worker but also a friendly face to all who crossed her path. Her colleagues and customers alike will remember her for her unwavering work ethic and her warm, welcoming smile.
Beyond her work, Margaret had a passion for life that was evident in her hobbies. She loved working in the yard, a testament to her love for nature and the outdoors. Her garden was a place of tranquility and beauty, much like Margaret herself. Above all, her greatest joy was taking care of her family, a task she undertook with boundless love and patience.
Margaret's family was her world, and she leaves behind a legacy of love that will be carried on by her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews will also hold dear the memories of her kindness and the sense of unity she fostered within the family.
In her final months, Margaret was lovingly supported by her granddaughter Christina Bowden and Erica Finney, as well as Gentiva Hospice nurses and staff. Their dedication, care, and support provided comfort and peace to Margaret, and for this, the family extends their heartfelt gratitude.
