Malcolm Exum Obituary

Malcolm Douglas Exum, affectionately known as Doug to friends and family, departed this life on March 14, 2025, at the age of 67, in Atlanta, Georgia. Born on February 2, 1958, in Columbus, Georgia, to the late Thomas Tillman Exum Jr. and Sarah Valrea Exum, Doug's life was marked by a profound sense of dedication to his loved ones and his craft. He is remembered as a man who lived his life with integrity, a steadfast commitment to his values, and a heart full of love for those around him.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 3:30 PM ET at Girard Cemetery in Phenix City, Alabama with Jonathan Goode officiating.

Doug grew up surrounded by a large and loving family and is predeceased by his parents, daughter, Candice Marie Exum and brothers, Thomas Tillman Exum III, Gregory David Exum, and Daniel Michael Exum. His legacy continues through his surviving family, which includes his brother James Fletcher Exum, sisters Sherry Exum Starley and Donna Exum Boozer (David), his daughter Brandi Exum (Mike), his cherished grandsons Graison Skyler McDonald (Sarah), Scott McDonald (Taylor), Seth Price, Chance Wilson, and Shawn Grau, his adored granddaughters Gaynelle Stormie McDonald, and Heaven Padgett, as well as his great-grandchild Saylor McDonald, son-in-law Scott McDonald and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doug was a masterful carpenter, contractor, and superintendent, whose hands skillfully created and restored structures with the same care and attention he devoted to building his relationships. Even after retirement, Doug's reputation as the "world's best storyteller" remained unchallenged, captivating the hearts of all who had the pleasure of listening. His hard-headed and stubborn nature was recognized as an endearing testament to his character, as those traits underpinned his reliability and the trust he inspired in others.

An avid outdoorsman, Doug's love for grilling and fishing was only surpassed by the joy he found in the company of his best friend and grandson, Skyler. His passion for Elvis Presley's music often served as the soundtrack to many family gatherings, where his spirit and enthusiasm were contagious. Doug's deep faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him to live honestly and honorably, always standing by his word.

Those who knew Doug will fondly remember him as the epitome of "handy," with a talent for fixing anything that came his way. His resourcefulness and skill were matched only by his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Doug's presence brought a sense of comfort and security, knowing that he could and would tackle any challenge with unwavering determination.

As we bid farewell to Doug, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey that has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. His stories, laughter, and the wisdom he shared will be treasured memories that continue to inspire and guide us. Doug's life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of faith, and the value of a promise kept.
