Lewis Eugene "Gene" Shumate, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on February 18, 2025, in Columbus, GA, at the age of 59. Born on September 16, 1965, in Florida, Gene was a man of warmth and dedication, known for his love of family and passion for all things automotive.
Gene grew up in Alabama, where he developed a lifelong love for cars that would define much of his life. His career as a tow truck driver was more than a job; it was a calling that allowed him to help others while indulging in his love for vehicles. Gene's work ethic and friendly demeanor made him a well-respected member of the community and a valued colleague.
Outside of work, Gene's interests were deeply intertwined with his love for cars. He was a familiar face at local car shows with his uncle, Ray Vasquez, where he shared his extensive knowledge and appreciation for classic automobiles. His hands were rarely clean, as he spent countless hours working on cars and assembling model cars, a hobby that brought him immense joy and satisfaction.
Gene's greatest pride, however, was his family. He was a devoted son to his late parents, Joel Shumate, Sr., and Jeanie Herring Clouatre. As a loving father to his daughters, Brandi Strickland (Joseph Collins), Amanda Spear, Candice Spear, and Traci Shumate, he instilled in them the values of hard work and the importance of family. Gene's role as "Pop Pop" to his grandchildren, Wyatt Strickland, Destiny Smith, Landon Mathis, Kaleb Dykes, Elijah Clayberger, Justice Spear, Raelyn Maloy, Rylee Maloy, Joey Collins, John Collins, Austin Delong, Tristen Suggs, Logan Suggs and Kasler Dawson, was one he embraced with every ounce of his being. His eyes would light up with every visit, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Gene's siblings, Brian Shumate (Amy), Joel Shumate, Van Shumate, Lashawn Shumate, and Eddie Dalton, will remember him as a brother who was always there for a laugh, a helping hand, or a word of advice. He was preceded in death by his brother Roger Tanton and his special nephew Joel Shumate, with whom he now shares a heavenly reunion. He is also survived by his ex-wife and friend, Tami Shumate, who helped care for him.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 10:00 am ET at Colonial Funeral Home in Phenix City, Alabama with Pastor Clay Duck officiating. As we bid farewell to Gene, we celebrate a life truly well-lived, one that was filled with purpose, grace, and an unwavering love for the Lord.
