Lewis King Obituary

Lewis King, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 1st, 2024, in Columbus, Georgia, at the age of 91. Born on July 12th, 1932, in Rossville, Georgia, Lewis's life was marked by dedication, service, and the love he shared with his family and community.

Mr. King is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Betty Jean Godbey King, his loving children, Linda Godbey Churlin, Troy King and his wife Cynthia, Edgar Eli Godbey and his wife Maria Fe, and Lisa King. He was a proud Grandfather to his grandchildren, Amber Ward, James Churlin, and Edgar Elijah Godbey III, and he cherished moments with his great-grandchildren, Matthew Churlin, Emma Churlin, Brittney Ward, and Kyler Ward. His sisters Marlene and Maryneil will also hold dear the memory of their brother. He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Lewis's commitment to his country was evident through his 35 years of service in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Three (CW3). His dedication to his work continued post-military as he transitioned into a successful career as an accountant, where his meticulous nature and integrity were highly valued.

A man of faith, Lewis was an active member of the Phenix First Church in Phenix City. His spirituality was a guiding force in his life and provided him with comfort and strength. He believed in living his beliefs through actions, which was evident in how he cared for his family and community.

Known for his friendly demeanor and handy skills, Lewis was the go-to person for fixing cars and various tasks around the house. He had a natural talent for making things work and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. His compassion extended to animals as well, as he often took in stray puppies, providing them with love and a forever home.

As we bid farewell to Lewis King, we carry forward the lessons he taught through his example: service to one's country, devotion to family, and the simple act of extending kindness to all living creatures. His memory will continue to inspire us, and his spirit will always be a part of the lives he has shaped.
