Jose was born on April 24, 1947 to Virgilio and Emilia Medina Mejias in Puerto Rico.

He is survived by his wife Maria Medina of Phenix City, AL and three children, Liz V. Rivera Medina, Jose R. Rivera Medina, and Jose J. Rivera Medina.
