John Leroy Knighton, known affectionately as Johnny to his friends and family, passed away on July 21, 2025, in Columbus, Georgia. Born on October 17, 1953, Johnny's life was a melody of joy, love, and enduring strength that resonated with all who knew him. He was a cherished father, brother, and grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and kindness.
A graveside service to honor Johnny's life will be held on Monday, July 28th, 2025, at 2:30 PM ET at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Pastor Charles Hays will officiate the service, celebrating Johnny's journey and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those he touched.
Johnny is survived by his two devoted sons, John Anthony Knighton and his wife Lynley, and Christopher Brian Knighton and his wife Susie. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his three siblings, Joy Holland and her husband Benny, Gloria Wentland, and Paul Knighton. His grandchildren, who brought immense happiness to his life, along with several cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews, will miss his guiding presence. Johnny now joins his beloved son, Raymond Chad Knighton, and his parents, John William and Betty Ann (West) Knighton, in eternal rest.
After bravely serving in the U.S. Navy, Johnny embarked on a career as a truck driver, a job he performed with dedication for many years. His work ethic and the camaraderie he shared with his colleagues were as steadfast as his commitment to his country. A man of faith, Johnny found comfort and guidance in Christianity. His belief was a cornerstone of his life, providing him with strength and solace through all of life's journeys.
Johnny's passion for music, especially the southern rock of the 70's era, was more than just a hobby—it was a vital part of who he was. A talented musician, he could often be found with a trumpet or guitar in hand, filling the room with beautiful melodies that reflected the rhythm of his soul. His musical talents will be remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure of hearing him play.
