John Raymond Cook, 90, of Smiths Station, Alabama passed away on November 05, 2021 in Smiths Station, AL.
He was born on August 11, 1931 to Jim Henry Cook and Lou Ethel Wilkinson in Columbus, Georgia.
Mr. Cook had a few careers during his life starting with playing professional baseball under the Phillies organization. He then went on to work for Muscogee County at the police department as well as Columbus Treasury Department. He went on to be business owner of a bait shop on the backwaters and going into insurance sales. He spent many days traveling with softball teams around the U.S. and was inducted into the Senior Softball Hall of Fame in 1998. He was loved and respected by hundreds of people on and off the athletic field, he was a gentleman, kind hearted and wise. He will be missed. He was our hero.
He is survived by six children, Nancy Grantham (Rodger "Rocky") of Salem, AL, Henry Gallups (Carol), Tyia Dawson (Ronald), Joyce Duke, Trisha Smith (Dan), and Bruce Quimby (Susan); two sisters, Iris Lloyd and Barbara Eldridge. numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Omie Cribb Cook; three sons, Robert Stanley Cook, John Wesley Cook, and Ron Gallups; and six siblings, Haywood Cook, Evelyn Stripling-McBride, Curtis "Pete" Cook, Lewis Cook, Vivian Jones, and Gerald Cook.
A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
