James "Jimmy" Whatley Sr. Obituary

James David Whatley Sr., known affectionately as Jimmy to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2024, in Salem, Alabama. Born on July 14, 1941, in Phenix City, Alabama, Jimmy lived a full life marked by his entrepreneurial spirit, love for his family, and a passion for the simple joys of country living.

Jimmy was a man of many talents and interests. He was the proud owner of Whatley Trucking, a company he built with hard work and dedication. His entrepreneurial ventures didn't stop there; he also started a motocross track that expanded from the East Alabama Motor Speedway, bringing joy and excitement to many. Jimmy's love for motorsports was only matched by his fondness for the outdoors. He took great pleasure in raising chickens and cows on his property, and his skills in the kitchen were well known among his loved ones, especially when it came to cooking up his favorite dish, catfish.

Beyond his business accomplishments and hobbies, Jimmy was a family man at heart. He is survived by a loving and extensive family, including his two children, James Whatley (Susan) of  AL, and Renee Whatley of AL. His legacy continues through his six grandchildren, Dannielle Gentry, Shelby Monhof, Joshua Dawson, Christy Dawson, Lori Ann Bryant (Ray), and Jessica Reichie (Chris); and his twelve great-grandchildren, Hudson, Kason, Zaralee, Tegan, Jacob, Landon, Adalynn, Jadeyn, Jordyn, Corban, Madison, and Patrick (Trinty), as well as two great-great-grandchildren, Lange and Axton. Jimmy also leaves behind his brother, Michael Whatley of TX; brother-in-law, Coston Marler (Deb) of GA; and sisters-in-law, Mary Baker and Doris Shannon, both of AL.

Preceding him in death was his beloved spouse of 54 years, Eva Nell (Marler) Whatley, who was undoubtedly waiting to welcome him with open arms. His parents, N.B. and Margaret (Nichols) Whatley, and siblings, Linda Whatley Groff and Frank Whatley, also preceded him in his journey to eternal rest.
