James Thomas Maddox, known affectionately by friends and family as Buck, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, in Columbus, Georgia. Born on October 13, 1938, Buck lived a life marked by devotion to his country, his community, and the people he loved.
Buck grew up under the warm Florida sun before finding his way to Elba, Alabama, where he would later be laid to rest. His early years were shaped by the love and guidance of his parents, Luther Oliver and Mavis Marie (Peacock) Maddox, and his siblings. Although Buck is preceded in death by his parents and four of his siblings, Gerald, Johnny, Donald, and Anna, his legacy continues through his brother Eddie Maddox, along with his adored nieces and nephews, who will carry forward the memories and values he cherished.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Buck served his country with honor and dedication. After his military service, he returned to civilian life and became a respected member of the workforce at Swift Mills in Columbus, Georgia. Buck's strong work ethic and commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on his colleagues and all who knew him.
Buck's passion for life was evident in his unwavering support for the Central Red Devils Football team. He was a familiar face in the stands, never missing a home game, and his enthusiasm for the sport was infectious. His loyalty to the team was a reflection of his loyalty to his friends and family, a virtue that defined his character.
Visitation for Buck will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, from 5 to 7 pm ET at Colonial Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL. Friends, family, and those whose lives were touched by Buck are welcome to join in celebrating his life and sharing memories of a man whose presence was a gift to all.
Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday, March 8th, 2025, at 1 PM ET at Woodland Grove Baptist Church in Elba, Alabama, The service will honor his life and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those he encountered.
In life, Buck was a beacon of strength and kindness. In passing, he leaves a void that cannot be filled, but also a blueprint for a life well-lived that will inspire others to follow in his footsteps. We say goodbye to Buck Maddox, not with sorrow, but with gratitude for the time we were privileged to share with him.
