Born on September 5, 1949, in Fort Benning, Georgia, James lived a life marked by dedication to his country, his family, and his passions.
James "Bear" Whitaker Jr.'s life will be honored and remembered at graveside services to be held on Monday, May 19th, 2025, at 11:00 AM ET at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. The service will be a celebration of a life lived with honor, joy, and a deep connection to those he loved.
Bear's early life in Fort Benning set the stage for a lifetime of service and commitment. After completing his education, he proudly served in the United States Army, a testament to his unwavering patriotism and sense of duty. Following his military service, James built a career at Kellogg's in Columbus, Georgia, where he was respected for his work ethic and camaraderie with colleagues.
Beyond his professional life, James was an avid gold panner, a hobby that took him on numerous trips to Tennessee, where he immersed himself in the thrill of the find. His love for this pastime led him to become a member of the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA), where he shared his enthusiasm and knowledge with fellow gold panning aficionados.
Bear's interests were not limited to the solitary pursuit of gold panning; he was also an active participant in his community. He had a passion for bowling and made many friends at the lanes over the years. Moreover, Bear left a lasting impact on youth sports, generously giving his time as a coach and umpire for youth baseball. His influence on the young players was profound, instilling in them the values of teamwork and sportsmanship.
Family was the cornerstone of James's life. He is survived by his loving children, Lee Ann Valero (Bobby), Karissa Whitaker, and Justin Whitaker. Bear's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Caitlyn Mefford and James Mefford, and his great-grandchild, Dante Long. He also leaves behind his sister, Debbie Whitaker, and his nephew, Randy Whitaker. Bear was preceded in death by his parents, James M. Whitaker Sr. and Doris (Wallace) Whitaker, his sister, Paula Whitaker and his wife, Jeanne Whitaker. The void left by his passing will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bear's journey through life was marked by his jovial spirit, his unwavering support for his family and friends, and his commitment to the pursuits that brought joy to him and those around him.
