Gwendolyn Joiner Obituary

Gwendolyn Corbett Joiner, affectionately known as Memaw and Mrs. Gwen to her loved ones, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024, in Phenix City, Alabama. Born on August 21, 1932, in Columbus, Georgia, she was a beacon of creativity, adventure, and spirit throughout her 91 years of life.

Gwendolyn's journey began as the cherished daughter of the late William Henry Corbett and Mary Alpha McLendon Corbett. She was the loving sister to Martha Lavender and Hubert Bertram Corbett, and to Thomas Harold Corbett, who survive her. She was predeceased by her husband, Larry Joiner, her beloved siblings, Louise Corbett Renka, Florence McCann, Dorothy Wilde, William Corbett, John Mack Corbett, and Lloyd Maston Corbett, who all left indelible marks on her heart.

Her legacy of love and laughter is carried on by her son, Robert Wayne Duckett and his wife Mary Ann, her stepdaughter, Lisa Harmon, and her adoring grandchildren, Leah Michelle Duckett and four others. She was a proud great-grandmother to five and great-great-grandmother to eleven, who will grow up hearing stories of her kindness and zest for life.

Gwendolyn was a talented and passionate cosmetologist, having honed her skills at the Columbus Beauty School. She dedicated nearly five decades of her life to bringing beauty and joy to others as a hairstylist before retiring in 2005. Her work was not just a profession but a way to connect with and serve her community.

An active member of the Crawford Methodist Church, Gwendolyn also served in the United Methodist Women's auxiliary, where she formed lifelong friendships and found great fulfillment in her faith and service.

Her interests were as vibrant and diverse as her personality. Gwendolyn's garden was a testament to her love for the earth and its beauty, with blooms and plants that were as colorful and lively as she was. Her hands were rarely still, as she poured her creativity into crocheting and dressmaking, crafting pieces that were both beautiful and heartfelt.

A fan of the twang and heartfelt lyrics of country music, Gwendolyn never missed an opportunity to tune into the Grand Ole Opry, her spirit dancing along with the melodies. Her passion for sports was evident in her unwavering support for Auburn Football and the Atlanta Braves, cheering them on with the same enthusiasm she brought to every aspect of her life.

Gwendolyn's spirit was one of adventure and exploration, always ready to embark on a new journey or experience. Her creativity was not just a trait but a way of life that she embraced fully, leaving a legacy of handmade treasures and gardens that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
