Mr. Gary Louis Singley, 91 years of age, passed away on Saturday, September 28th, 2024 in Columbus, GA.
Gary was born on June 27,1933, in Minier, Illinois. He lived in Mississippi with his parents until his his mother, Daphne Springer, passed away when Gary was 9 years old. He was raised by his great aunts, Mary, Eliza and Sue Springer on a small farm in Minier, IL. Gary attended school in Stanford, Illinois where he played baseball, basketball and graduated as the Salutatorian of his high school class. After high school, he attended the University of Illinois where he earned an associates degree in Aviation, a Commercial Pilot's License and a Power Plant & Air Frame Mechanic's License. With his fresh diploma in hand he joined the Army in 1953 as a combat engineer and was stationed in Germany. Gary served 14 years on active duty. His various assignments include Fort Campbell, KY, Korea, and White Sand Missile Range. He completed Airborne, Ranger School and an associates degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Electronic Technology.
After leaving the military he attended Bradley University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. He was hired by Caterpillar Tractor in Peoria, IL as a mechanical engineer and retired after 25 years at the company.
Gary was known for his passion for competitive rifle shooting. He taught his son ,Grant, at a young age and they spent countless hours on the rifle range practicing and competing. He was also a devout Presbyterian and enjoyed volunteering his time to the church.
Gary was married to Sherrill Anne Singley(Brunner, deceased) in April of 1966 and is survived by his son, Grant Singley (Jama).
