Mrs. Elizabeth Chatham Dudley, affectionately known as Liz or Lizzie to her family and friends, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2024, at her home in Pittsview, Alabama. Born on October 17, 1934, in Lumpkin, Georgia, Liz was a beacon of love and selflessness throughout her 89 years.
Liz lived a life marked by devotion to her family and an unwavering spirit of generosity. She was a homemaker extraordinaire, taking great pride in keeping a warm and welcoming home. Her culinary skills were legendary within the family, and her homemade biscuits, chicken and dressing, tomato gravy, and salmon patties were staples at family gatherings, leaving a legacy of cherished recipes and full hearts.
Her commitment to her family was evident in every aspect of her life. She is survived by her loving children, Wayne (Debra) Broadwater, Verda Gray, Clifford (Janet) Broadwater, Mary (Melvin) Ingram, Debra (Terry) Melton, Lisa (Mike) Dileonardo, and Tammy (Tony) Schulte. Liz's life was further enriched by the joy she found in her role to her sister Evaline Smith, as a grandmother, and as a great-grandmother and even a great-great-grandmother. Each new addition to the family was welcomed with the same love and care she had shown all her life.
A special note of gratitude is extended to Macy Schulte, her special caregiver granddaughter, who provided Liz with support and companionship, embodying the same spirit of kindness that Liz herself had always shown.
Liz was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Laura Chatham, and her children, Freddie Broadwater, Evelyn Broadwater, and Patricia Owens. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her memory will continue to inspire and guide her loved ones.
Liz's life was one of quiet dedication. Her hands, always busy, were as adept at soothing a grandchild's tears as they were at crafting a meal or mending a tear in a well-loved piece of clothing. She had a gift for making the ordinary extraordinary, and her presence was a comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
The family will receive friends during visitation on Monday evening from 6-8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home. The funeral service celebrating Liz's life will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am at the same location. Following the service, Liz will be laid to rest at Crawford Cemetery.
In her life, Liz taught those around her the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the joy of simple pleasures. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and the sweet aroma of her cooking filling the home. Liz Dudley was the heart of her family, a true matriarch, whose influence will be felt for generations to come.
As we bid farewell to Liz, we take comfort in knowing that her life was well lived and that her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the memories of those she touched. Rest in peace, dear Liz. Your love and kindness will never be forgotten.
