Reverend Donnie Chester Cook was a caring husband, father, granddaddy, brother, son and friend. He left this world on November 25, 2022 after 5 years of battling Parkinson’s Disease.
Known around the city for his kind heart and gentle spirit, Donnie served as Associate Pastor and Minister of Music at Liberty Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia for 34 years. He also previously served at Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia, as well as other local churches and the Columbus Baptist Association. He selflessly served his church and his family with great humility and loyalty. Donnie was also known for his beautiful singing voice and playing the saxophone.
Donnie was born to Ferrell and Josephine Cook of Buena Vista, Georgia on October 14, 1955. He was raised in Buena Vista and graduated from Tri-County High School, Georgia Southwestern State University, and Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His whole life was marked by sacrificial kindness and love. He was a devoted husband to Regis McKay Cook for 38 years, and raised two daughters, Donya Regis Vaughn and Lauren Monte Heath. His joy was to spend time with his girls and grandkids, and tell his many stories of growing up, including what car he was driving when the story took place. Donnie passed along his passion for music and art, as well as his love of optimism.
Donnie is survived by his wife Regis McKay Cook, daughters Lauren (Josh) Heath and Donya (GySgt Walter) Vaughn, grandchildren Monte, Madeline, McKenna, and Micah Heath, Emma and Savannah Vaughn, father Ferrell Cook, brother John Howard (Kathy) Cook, niece Anna Cook, and many other treasured family members. He is preceded in death by his mother Josephine Cook.
A visitation is scheduled for 5 pm on November 27 at Christ Community Church at 4078 Milgen Road, Columbus, Georgia. The viewing and funeral service is scheduled for 2 pm on November 28 at Liberty Baptist Church at 934 Valley Forge Road, Columbus, Georgia, with a viewing at 1pm.
