Loved ones surrounded him to the end. A man of many careers, Donald was raised on a family farm in Rodman, N.Y., before opening his own cattle hauling business. In the 1980s, he moved south to Columbus, Ga., where he worked for the John A. Pope Motor Company. Shortly after, Don and his soul made Linda Helene Peebles began their foray into the business world with their first flea market stall. Donald opened a furniture store in Phenix City, Ala., within a year. They opened an additional two stores and managed them for another 32 years. Throughout his long career, Donald and Linda also operated several investment properties. He then lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Lynne and Jeffrey Lewis Criane, in Laurens, S.C., for several years following his retirement. Donald was preceded in death by his wife Linda; brothers Gordon of Lowville, N.Y., Carl of Rodman, N.Y., Ken of Adams, N.Y., Rick of Michigan, and Bob of Charleston, S.C., who was a Navy veteran buried at sea; as well as his children Sherri Sartin of Phenix City, Ala., and Steven Lennox of Adams, N.Y. He is survived by his son, James Donald Peebles, daughter Deborah; grandchildren Rachelle Marie Bull, Jessica Elizabeth Toper, Ryan Barker, Samantha Peebles, Jesse James Sartin, Matthew Lennox, David Lennox, Michael Lennox; and great-grandchildren Alissia Marie Bull, Stephanie Marie Bull, John Michael Toper, Jax Toper, and Kayden Groff. Services will be conducted through Colonial Funeral Home with an intimate graveside service at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20. He will be interred at the Lakeview Memory Garden in Phenix City, Ala. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to local humane societies, hospice houses, or the National Alzheimer’s Association.
