Dollie Maude Hayes Erickson died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of January 19th, 2024 at the age of 97.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at 1:30pm ET at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.
Dollie was born on August 14, 1926 to Stephen J and Rosa L Hayes in Mauk, Georgia. Although she lost her mother at age 8 and her father at age 11 she was cared for by her maternal grandparents until she left farm life for city life in Atlanta, Georgia. There she met Vernon Erickson, a handsome, debonair serviceman just back from WWII. They married in 1951 and she became a dedicated, adaptable military wife making a good life and home for her husband and two daughters with assignments in Asia, Europe and in the United States through the end of his 32 year military career. She was the heart of our home.
She did not anticipate that her husband’s midwestern roots would reemerge and they would return to farm life after retirement where they lived for nearly 50 years. During his final 10 years of working, out-of-town, she ran that farm. Where Vernon was an engineer and operated with precision and perfection, Dollie was a Macgyver who could make or repair things in inventive ways making use of whatever she had on hand to complete the job. They were the perfect match for 72 years.
Dollie was a steel magnolia, exemplifying traditional femininity but also possessing uncommon fortitude. She was a very religious woman as well as a devoted wife and a loving mother to her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and talented seamstress as well as a green thumb gardener. She loved birds, flowers and animals. She was very capable and determined yet always humble and down to earth. She was strong and independent yet very gracious and diplomatic. She had an uncanny ability to read and relate to people and through the years she shared her wisdom through Momisms which have withstood the test of time. She was a person who possessed incredible common sense and great emotional intelligence. The icing on the cake is that she was also a very funny person!
She was preceded in death four months ago by her beloved husband, Vernon A Erickson. Her parents Stephen and Rosa Hayes and siblings, Thomas Hayes (Onnie), Beulah Watson (Edgar), Lois Blackston (Loren) and William (Buck) Hayes (Sarah) all passed before her.
She is survived by daughter Sharon Erickson Tims of Leesville, LA, daughter Angela Erickson Allen (Daniel) of Martinez, GA, two grandsons Ryan Duff of Augusta, Georgia, Rhett Allen (Alexis) of Machida, Japan, one great grandson, Nero Allen of Machida, Japan, a host of nieces and nephews and her loyal pup, Que.
In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite animal shelter or sanctuary since she truly loved animals.
