Clayton Stewart Obituary

Clayton Frazier Stewart, age 87, of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025. Known affectionately as Clayton, he was a man who lived a life marked by passion, dedication, and a love for his family and community.

Born on September 10, 1937, to the late Joseph Huey Stewart and Mattie Temperence McWaters Stewart, Clayton grew up in an era of simplicity and hard work. He inherited his parents' strong values, which he carried with him throughout his life. His beloved wife, Merle Lee Stewart, predeceased him, leaving behind a legacy of love and partnership that will forever be cherished by those who knew them.

Clayton's professional life was characterized by his tenure with Fieldcrest Cannon, from which he retired after many years of committed service. But work was only one aspect of his life. His voice was one of his greatest gifts, and for over 25 years, he uplifted spirits as a member of the "Happy Five Gospel Quartet." His deep baritone brought joy to many and will resonate in the memories of his loved ones and the community.

Family was the cornerstone of Clayton's life. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Deborah Waldrup, and her husband Ken; his loving granddaughter Kim Chandler and her husband Robbie; his cherished grandson, Matt Waldrup and his wife Lindsay, and their son, his great-grandson Liam Waldrup. Each of them will carry forward the lessons of kindness, strength, and integrity that he instilled in them.

Clayton's interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. An avid outdoorsman, he spent countless hours fishing, bird hunting, and training hunting dogs. His connection to nature was a source of great peace and fulfillment. A lifelong fan of Alabama football, he rarely missed a game and celebrated each victory with the same enthusiasm as if it were the first. His 1965 Ford Mustang was his pride and joy, a classic symbol of his handy nature and his passion for the finer things in life.

Those who knew Clayton would agree that he was a man of many talents. His hands could fix almost anything, and his heart was always open to those in need. Whether offering a helping hand or a word of encouragement, Clayton's presence was a comfort to all.
