Barney John McCabe, known to many simply as Barney, passed away on April 24, 2026, in Phenix City, Alabama, while visiting his grandchildren. He was 72 years old. Born in Ireland on April 5, 1954, he carried the values of his upbringing throughout his life and will be remembered with deep affection by all who knew him.
Barney was a quiet man whose presence spoke as clearly as his words. He was handy, loving, and steady in all that he did, and he brought those qualities into every part of his life. He had a natural ability to work with his hands and took great pride in new home construction, where his skill, care, and attention to detail were evident. His work reflected not only craftsmanship but also a strong sense of responsibility and dedication.
Outside of work, Barney found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. He loved gardening, maintaining and improving his home, and spending time with his wife and family. He especially cherished the moments shared with those closest to him, and his happiest times were often found in the company of loved ones. His home was a reflection of his character, cared for with patience, pride, and a lifelong commitment to making things better for those around him.
Barney is survived by his wife, Mary Lordan McCabe; his grandchildren, Payton McCabe Green and Keaton McCabe Green; and his great-grandchildren, Ava Michelle Green, Adelynn Rose Green, Everleigh Jean Green, and Kodi Leigh Green. He is also survived by his brother, Martin McCabe, and his sister, Jo McKelvey. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Patricia Dunn McCabe, as well as by his daughter, Charlie O'Neil Green, and his son, Joey O'Neil.
Those who knew Barney will remember his gentle nature, his strong hands, and the love he showed through his actions. He did not seek attention, but his quiet strength and dependable spirit left a lasting impression. His family and friends will forever treasure the memories of his kindness, his devotion, and the example he set through a life lived with humility and care.
Barney’s legacy lives on in the family he loved, the work he completed, and the many lives he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were blessed to know him.
A service will be announced later in Ireland
