Barbara Ann Gunter passed away surrounded by her loving family in Columbus, Georgia on April 20, 2024, at the age of 65. Born on March 10, 1959, in Columbus, Georgia. Barbara's life was a testament to her unwavering strength and her ability to inspire those around her.
Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late Edward John Sinkule and Betty Sue (Batcheldor) Sinkule. Others who preceded her in death include brothers Peter Dale, David Charles, Joseph Holbert, James Edward, brother in-law Gary Wayne Gunter, and father-in law Furman Nelson Gunter.
A graduate of Glenwood High School, Barbara's academic achievements were but a prelude to a fulfilling career with the Russell County Board of Education. For 30 years, she served diligently in multiple roles until her well-deserved retirement. Her colleagues will remember her as a pillar of reliability and wisdom.
Barbara's passion for athletics was ignited during her high school years, where she shone as a track star, particularly in the 800-meter race where she won an Alabama State Championship. This passion for movement and competition stayed with her throughout her life, as she continued to train and race marathons, bicycle races, and even an Ironman in 2021. Even during her illness, she completed a 5k with her family and friends. Barbara also enjoyed spending her time on her uncle’s and father-in-law’s farms, quilting, and caring for her many beloved pets (and some that weren’t). She was an avid member of multiple running and biking clubs, quilting clubs, and even the Alabama Farmers’ Federation.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her devoted husband of 43 years, Eric Gunter, and her proud son Edmund Vincent Gunter, along with his wife Halle. Her mother-in law Theresa Virginia, sisters Catherine S McVay, Caroline Sinkule Steiner and her brothers Thomas Joseph Sinkule and Paul Gregory Sinkule.
